POSITION AVAILABLE

General Workers (400 Posts)

These positions are aimed at individuals who are willing to perform physically demanding work and support daily waste management operations throughout Johannesburg.

WORK LOCATION

Successful candidates will be deployed across various City of Johannesburg regions, depending on operational requirements. These may include, but are not limited to:

  • Refuse collection routes

  • Street cleaning zones

  • Pikitup depots

  • Public spaces and facilities

  • Recycling and waste separation areas

Deployment will be based on organisational needs and may change from time to time.

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

The primary purpose of the General Worker role is to assist with refuse collection, cleaning, and waste management activities in order to maintain a clean and healthy city environment. General Workers are essential to ensuring that waste is collected efficiently and disposed of safely in accordance with municipal regulations.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General Workers appointed by Pikitup may be expected to perform a wide range of duties, including but not limited to:

  • Collecting household and business refuse

  • Loading and offloading refuse trucks

  • Cleaning streets, sidewalks, and public spaces

  • Removing illegal dumping and litter

  • Assisting with recycling initiatives

  • Sorting waste where required

  • Cleaning depots, yards, and workstations

  • Supporting landfill and waste transfer operations

  • Following health, safety, and environmental procedures

  • Using basic tools and equipment safely

  • Working as part of a team to complete daily tasks

  • Reporting hazards, safety risks, or operational issues

  • Complying with municipal rules and Pikitup policies

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

To qualify for consideration, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:

  • Must be a South African citizen

  • Must have a valid South African ID document

  • Must be currently unemployed

  • Grade 10–12 qualification will be an advantage but is not always compulsory

  • Must be physically fit and able to perform manual labour

  • Willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • Willing to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays if required

  • Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision

  • No criminal record (may be required)

No prior experience is required, as on-the-job training will be provided.
